Prefaces have gone out of fashion. They are usually excuses, or explanations, or apologies, or something akin, for having written what follows them. This little book needs no preface, but here is one and a dedication as well, for in this work I have endeavored lo serve young American Engineers who have taken to the business seriously by mentioning a few troubles they are likely to encounter, but it is only mention, for the one thing which can not be imparted is experience. Time, study, and practice alone can give it. No man was ever made an engineer by a book.
