John W. Dean was born on a farm about four miles west of Nickerson, Kansas, in the same house where Alex Pearson, winner of the first cross-country airplane race, was later born. Dean became interested in astronomy at a very early age, and grew up believing the known planets in our galaxy were inhabited.
